'Game of Thrones' prequel gets official title: 'Aegon's Conquest'

The world of Westeros is expanding once again, this time with a feature film officially titled Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest.

The project was confirmed by Warner Bros. during its presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on April 14. The film marks the franchise’s first major move into theatrical release.

The prequel picture will focus on Daenerys Targaryen's ancestor, Aegon I Targaryen, the ruler who united the Seven Kingdoms.

The events take place about 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, exploring the origins of Targaryen rule in Westeros.

Beau Willimon has been tapped to write the screenplay, who previously worked on House of Cards and Andor.

While no cast members have been confirmed, fan speculation has already circulated online, including rumored names for the lead roles of Aegon and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys.

Fans can also expect to see dragons in the series, as the conquering trio rode monstrous beasts: Balerion the Black Dread, the largest Targaryen dragon; Vhagar, which appears in House of the Dragon; and Meraxes.

Production details and a release date have yet to be announced.

Apart from Aegon's Conquest, two other Game of Thrones prequels have hit TV: House of the Dragon, which is dropping its third season this June, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

The franchise is based on George R.R. Martin's books in the Song of Ice and Fire novels as well as spinoffs Fire & Blood and Tales of Dunk and Egg.
