‘Supernatural’ prequel series ‘The Winchesters’ in the works at The CW
A prequel to The CW's longest-running live-action TV series Supernatural is reportedly in the works.
As reported by Deadline, the upcoming series titled The Winchesters will follow the story of Dean and Sam Winchesters' parents, John and Mary. Jensen Ackles, who portrayed the role of Dean, will reportedly reprise his character off-cam to narrate the show.
“After Supernatural wrapped its 15th season, we knew it wasn’t over. Because like we say in the show, ‘nothing ever really ends, does it?'” Ackles said in an interview with Deadline. “When Danneel and I formed Chaos Machine Productions, we knew the first story we wanted to tell was the story of John and Mary Winchester, or rather the Supernatural origin story. I always felt like my character, Dean, would have wanted to know more about his parents’ relationship and how it came to be. So I love the thought of having him take us on this journey.”
Here's the description of The Winchesters: "Before Sam and Dean, there was John and Mary. Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles), The Winchesters is the epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love but the entire world."
The series, which starred Ackles and Jared Padalecki, ended its 15-season run last year. The show, created by Eric Kripke, revolved around brothers Dean and Sam who hunt demons, ghosts, monsters, and other supernatural beings. In the show, Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead) and Samanta Smith played the roles of John and Mary.
Ackles will executive produce the show along with his wife Danneel via their production company the Chaos Machine Productions. The show is also being written and executive produced by former Supernatural executive producer Robbie Thomson.
The CW has yet to announce the release date for The Winchesters.
