What were you "maxxing" this year?

If you’ve spent any time on social media recently, you’ve likely noticed this particular suffix attached to almost every daily routine, habit, or subculture imaginable. According to Dictionary.com, "maxxing" is doing an "activity to the fullest or optimizing a certain aspect of your life." You can use it with whatever activity you like, or you can use it on its own.

The term came from maximum and its related verbs like maximize and max, which eventually evolved to maxing, and the gaming term, "min-maxxing."

It added that maxxing can be "earnest, aspirational, or mocking."

"It captures the very 2026 urge to keep pushing harder while also giving us a way to poke fun at ourselves when optimizing our lives starts to feel absurd," it added.

Over time, people have attached "maxxing" to other words, hence the addition of another "x."

The dictionary went on to explain how looksmaxxing, among the earliest and most prominent forms of maxxing, spread across forums and social media, and how it sparked think pieces on society and the state of the English language.

Based on the internet history, looksmaxxing started appearing online as early as 2015, and by 2021, related terms like moneymaxxing, statusmaxxing, and surgerymaxxing had emerged. It later gained mainstream attention in late 2025 with variations like booksmaxxing to terms like cozymaxxing and salmonmaxxing.

Initially popular among the manosphere communities, Dictionary.com said that maxxing has since spread to a wider audience, from beauty, fitness, workplace AI discussions, and everyday life. While some use it to describe self-improvement, others use it to describe ordinary activities such as staying at home or "cozymaxxing."

Per Dictionary, com, other words that stood out this year were affordability, which became a popular topic in discussions; data center, which has been a common subject of debate amid the rise of artificial intelligence; and odyssey, which earned a new spotlight with Christopher Nolan's film of the same name; and unc, from the word "uncle," which refers to someone being "out of touch" or "uncool."
