A viral video of American actress Anne Hathaway—where she can be seen refusing to take photos and autographs with fans—resurfaced online, raising questions anew about whether she was being impolite.

The actress made the rounds on X after an Internet user reposted the said video of Hathaway on Monday, March 4. Initially shared by social media personality Oli London, the clip shows the international star alighting her car while dozens of fans holding their phones and cameras are waiting and cheering for her.

“I cannot take photos with everyone, but I will stand here and wave if you would like to take a photo,” she said. “I cannot sign, there’s too many of you.”

The fans, however, remained persistent.

“Mi dispiace (I'm sorry),” she said. “But I want you to have something. So if you’d like, I’ll just wave a little bit.”

“Thank you for understanding, thank you for waiting,” she added.

A fan tried to get a photo with her, but Hathaway reiterated that she couldn't grant the request.

“I cannot take it with you 'cause then, I have to take one with everyone, there’s so many,” she told the fan. “But thank you so much. Grazie,” she added with a smile while still waving to the crowd.

Several users commended Hathaway for what she did.

“She was being very polite. She wasn’t at a photo shoot, but graciously offered a few minutes to fans, which she wasn’t obligated to do,” one user said.

“Of course it’s polite. She declines fans’ requests as politely as possible given the situation, respecting both her fans but also making sure she is also respected as a person,” another user said.

Some users, however, accused Hathaway of being “condescending” and “fake.”

Hathaway recently made headlines after reuniting with her The Devil Wears Prada co-stars Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt during the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards. They presented the award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, which went to Jeremy Allen of the culinary show The Bear.

Hathaway is known for the movies The Princess Diaries, Love and Other Drugs, Les Miserables, and Ocean’s 8.

She has so far bagged an Academy Award, Golden Globe, SAG Award, and a British Academy Film Award, among others.
