Benefits of virgin coconut oil, the newest potential COVID-19 killer

Can virgin coconut oil be the cure?

A recent study has shown that virgin coconut oil (VCO) reduces the COVID-19 count from 90% to 60% for mild to moderate cases.

In a statement, Dr. Jaime C. Montoya, executive director of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) said, “The results are very promising, as not only does it show that the VCO, by itself, can destroy the virus, but it also has a key mechanism in upregulating the immune response against COVID-19.”

PCHRD is looking forward "to the results of clinical trials on the various uses of VCO as an adjunct for the treatment of COVID-19," Montoya added.

Additionally, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Fortunato de la Peña has shared in a media interview that a VCO analysis is set to be released by early November.

The DOST has earlier initiated research and experiments on VCO, lasting six months.

But next to coconut oil being a potential antiviral agent for coronavirus, studies have shown its other amazing benefits and uses. Here are some of them, according to American medical information and health advice source Healthline.

It can help shield the skin from ultraviolet rays by 20 percent. Applying coconut oil on your skin protects it from UV rays, “which can raise your skin cancer and cause wrinkling and brown spots.”

It can help keep your pearly whites clean and healthy. Gargling it for 10 minutes, as told by studies, can help reduce inflammation and plaque (for those with gingivitis) and eliminate bacteria just like an antiseptic mouthwash.

It can also soothe the skin and prevent other skin problems. Research has shown that 47% of children with eczema-prone skin yielded incredible improvements when they were treated with coconut oil.

It can be used as a moisturizer. You can apply it on your legs, arms, and elbows as well as the face if you don’t have oily skin.

It can help you lose belly fat. Obese males who incorporated two tablespoons of coconut oil into their diet were able to reduce their waist size by an inch.

It can help reduce hair protein loss. Just apply it before or after shampooing your hair, to help rejuvenate lost nutrients.

It can help keep your lips soft and moist. Aside from this, it can also protect your lips from sun damage.
