Elliot Page says wearing a suit to the Oscars for the first time was pure 'trans joy'

While the 94th Academy Awards was overshadowed by Will Smith smacking Chris Rock, there were a lot of queer moments that were just as big of a highlight. Elliot Page hit the Oscars red carpet in a suit for the first time since he came out as trans, a major milestone for the Umbrella Academy star.

The 35-year-old actor joined trans activists Raquel Willis and Chase Strangio in an Instagram Live to mark Transgender Week of Visibility.

"I feel the best I've ever felt. I feel the way I really never thought was possible," he said.

During the stream, Page spoke about what 'trans joy' means to him and how meaningful it is for him to grace the Oscars in a classic black Gucci tuxedo. He also got on stage for a Juno reunion with co-stars Jennifer Garner and J.K. Simmons for the film's 15th anniversary that night.

"Just the degree now that I can feel present, simply that I can feel present in a space without this incessant underlying anxiety or some sort of feeling like I need to flee," the actor shared.

"In more specific ways, [trans joy is] wearing a suit last night," he said about the recent awards night. "All those things are really special, wonderful, joyful moments where you're looking at a photograph, and it's really cool to see yourself for the first time—or the person you already saw—but here they are, like, they're f**king emerging."

The last time Page was at the Oscars was 14 years ago when he was nominated for his breakout role in Juno. He wore a vintage Jean-Louise Scherrer dress, which he told Oprah Winfrey in 2021 was "difficult" and "painful."

"I could not look at a photo from that red carpet," he said last year.

Page came out as trans, announcing his pronouns and name on Instagram in December 2020.

Recently, the Umbrella Academy star shared that his character Vanya Hargreeves will be henceforth known as Viktor.
