Man dies after jacket gets caught in escalator

A man passed away after his suit jacket got caught in an escalator at a train station in Japan.

Local media outlets, including Kyodo News and The Japan Times, reported that the incident took place at the Mito Station in Ibaraki Prefecture on Tuesday, March 26.

According to authorities, the 72-year-old man named Mamoru Suzuki “collapsed but was still conscious” when the back of his jacket got stuck in the handrail of the moving staircase around 9:00 p.m.

He was discovered by the train station staff near the exit of the escalator that bridges the station platform to the ticket gate area.

The Hitachi resident was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later declared dead.

The cause of his death is still unknown, per The Japan Times. Police are still looking into CCTV footage of the accident as of writing.
