40-year-old fast food joint in Greenbelt to remain open

Published Mar 20, 2025 2:33 pm

The McDonald's branch in Greenbelt will continue to serve customers in the Makati central business district.

The future of the fast food joint became up in the air after its neighbor Greenbelt 1 was torn down in April 2024 to make way for redevelopment.

A post about the branch closing down to be replaced by a luxury hotel also made the rounds online in early March.

"We want to assure our customers that McDonald's Greenbelt is not closing anytime soon," McDonald's Philippines Assistant VP for Corporate Relations and Impact Adi Hernandez said in a press release, adding that the store's drive-thru lane was recently renovated.

The Greenbelt branch, located along Paseo De Roxas, is also marking its 40th anniversary. It was the ninth McDonald's store to open in the Philippines.

Ayala Land, Inc. announced the closure of Greenbelt 1 in March 2024. The mall, which had been open since 1986, was built by Philippine National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin in 1982. Other parts, Greenbelt 2 to 5 were opened later.

In July 2023, the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts announced that there was a petition to remove the mall's status as an "important cultural property" in Makati by ALI.

The old mall will be rebuilt and reopened in 2028, with its new version blending "luxury and sustainability" and featuring skylights, rainwater collection systems, four levels of shops, and four levels of parking.

In December 2024, McDonald's closed one of its famous stores, the Quezon Avenue branch, which was built 40 years ago.
