The Suicide Squad writer/director James Gunn has hinted at the possibility of more spin-off series coming after Peacemaker. The first three episodes of the HBO Max series starring John Cena is set to stream on HBO GO in the Philippines this coming Thursday, Jan. 13.

Speaking to Screen Rant, James Gunn noted the finale of the series could set up potential future titles in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) for the dysfunctional anti-superhero team.

"Oh yes! [I'm thinking about others.] Perhaps [something is in the works]. I don't know [if the finale will reveal more]. If you're good at guessing, maybe," Gunn said.

After helping bring the Guardians of the Galaxy to life for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Gunn made his way to the world of the DCEU to write and direct the standalone sequel The Suicide Squad, which became the third most streamed film on HBO Max in 2021.

The film marked the debuts of multiple characters to the cinematic universe, including Idris Elba's Bloodsport, Daniela Melchior's Ratcatcher 2 and John Cena's Peacemaker, who believes in achieving peace at any cost.

The spin-off HBO Max series, created and written by Gunn, serves as both a sequel and prequel to The Suicide Squad as it explores the origins of Cena's character as well as his new missions following Project Starfish.

Peacemaker is the first DCEU television series and is produced by Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company in association with Warner Bros. Television, with Gunn serving as showrunner.

In the upcoming series, Cena is joined by Steve Agee as John Economos and Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt from the latest DCEU film alongside franchise newcomers Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, Rizwan Manji, Nhut Li and Lochlyn Munro.

Gunn previously confirmed plans to continue working with DC for both big and small-screen projects in the future and has confirmed that certain characters from the 2021 film, who were in danger, namely Weasel and Nathan Fillion's TDK are alive in the DCEU. Weasel was revealed to have survived in the mid-credits while T.D.K. was last seen alive but mortally wounded in the opening sequence.

Gunn has also teased a surprise character from The Suicide Squad making an appearance in Peacemaker, which could tie in with the hints at future spin-off shows.

Peacemaker will start streaming on HBO GO on Jan. 13, 2022.
