The Super Mario Bros. movie, starring Chris Pratt as Mario and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, has officially been delayed until 2023.

The animated film from Nintendo and Illumination was originally scheduled for a Christmas release this year on Dec. 21, 2022.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, made a simple announcment via the official Nintendo Twitter accounts on Tuesday (April 26).

"After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023—April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait," said Miyamoto.

Illumination, the studio behind movies like Despicable Me and Minions, which is producing the movie, also shared a similar announcement Tuesday.

“Miyamoto-san and I have been collaborating on all aspects of the Super Mario Bros. film and, togethers with our partners at Universal, have decided to move the global release to Spring 2023 - April 7 in North America and April 28 in Japan. We are excited to share this incredible film with you,” said Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination.

So it looks like Mario fans will have to wait a full year to see the movie in cinemas.

“Mario and Luigi are two of the most beloved heroes in all of popular culture, and we are honored to have the unique opportunity to work so closely with Shigeru Miyamoto and the widely imaginative team at Nintendo to bring these characters to life in an animated movie, unlike any film Illumination has made to date,” Meledandri previously said in a statement when the voice cast was first revealed.

Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath, the team behind Teen Titans Go, are directing the animated film.

The Super Mario Bros. film also stars Charlie Day as Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Jack Black as Bowser, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong.
