Perez Hilton is now focusing on his mental health as he continues treatment in a hospital following a serious incident earlier this month, his brother-in-law said.

Hilton, whose real name is Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., has been receiving treatment for physical injuries after he appeared to harm himself during a TikTok livestream from his Miami home on Aug. 4.

His brother-in-law Tom, who is married to Hilton's sister Barbara Lavandeira, gave an update on his condition during an episode of The Perez Hilton Podcast with Chris Booker released Monday, Aug. 24.

Tom said Hilton suffered multiple broken bones after falling several times during the night of the incident. He also sustained cuts that required medical treatment.

Hilton is now moving toward treatment focused on his mental health. Tom added that Hilton remains lucid and is able to communicate with family members, although there is currently no definite timeline for his recovery.

“So, we are now just transitioning into the mental side of things,” Tom said. “Although, of course, while he's in the hospital, while he's being treated for his physical ailments, psychiatrists come in and check in and see how he's doing and make sure he's not looking to harm himself.”

The update comes nearly three weeks after emergency services responded to Hilton's Miami home following reports that he was livestreaming acts of self-harm. He was subsequently hospitalized and placed under Florida's Baker Act, which allows authorities to temporarily hold a person for psychiatric evaluation when they are believed to be a danger to themselves or others.

In a statement shared earlier this month, Hilton's family said he was in serious but stable condition and receiving care from medical and mental health professionals. The family also said his recovery would be a lengthy process.

Hilton's recent health crisis followed a difficult period for the celebrity blogger. His family said he had been recovering from a severe case of sepsis before moving back to Miami to be closer to them. His brother-in-law also discussed the possibility that the illness could have affected the American columnist's mental state, but this was presented as speculation and has not been established as a medical explanation for the incident.

“The actual healing, or digging into what caused this mental break as I've called it, hasn't been discovered,” Tom said. “I don't know if it ever will be.”

Hilton has previously spoken publicly about his struggles with depression and self-harm. In an interview with Page Six, his sister Barbara described his long history of mental health struggles and said the family had tried to support him through previous difficult periods.

His three children are currently under the temporary custody of his mother, Teresita Lavandeira. He has since been granted supervised visitation, with visits requiring psychiatric clearance and supervision by an approved family member or therapist.

Hilton is an American blogger, media personality, and television figure best known for his celebrity gossip website which he launched in 2004. He became a prominent figure in entertainment media for his coverages of celebrities, pop culture, and Hollywood news.
