‘The Vanishing of Ethan Carter’ is free right now on the Epic Games Store

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, a first-person mystery game focused on exploration and discovery, is currently free-to-keep from the Epic Games Store.

Considered one of the best detective games on PC, it is the fourth game title in Epic’s lineup of "15 days of free games" they are releasing this December to count down to the new year.

While Epic Games usually releases a free game every week, they are currently giving out new free games every day at 10:00 a.m. CT.

The PC digital storefront kicked off their promotion on Dec. 16 by giving away the 2019 action-adventure game Shenmue III.

On the second day, users were treated to the frantic, roguelite action-platformer Neon Abyss, which was followed by Remnant: From The Ashes, one of 2019's sleeper hits from developer Gunfire Games and publisher Perfect World Entertainment.

Today’s free title, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter was released back in 2014 on Steam before the Epic Games Store was launched, so this marks the game's debut on the site.

The horror adventure game published by The Astronauts for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, takes inspiration from the weird fiction (and other tales of the macabre) from the early twentieth century.

Players take on the role of occult-minded detective Paul Prospero, in order to piece together the truth behind Ethan’s disappearance—and the fate of his family.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter aims to significantly evolve immersive storytelling in games. While it features a private detective and quite a few mental challenges, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is not an especially puzzle-ridden game. Our focus is on atmosphere, mood, and the essential humanity of our characters,” said the publisher.

The Redux edition released in 2015 adds improved visuals, a reworked save system that saves more often, improved loading times, and backtracking is now less of a chore.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is free right now on the Epic Games Store until Dec. 21, 2021 at 12:00 a.m., so be sure to pick it up fast here before the promotion totally vanishes. A new free mystery game is set to arrive shortly after.

To download free games, anyone can register with the Epic Games Store and users only need to log into their accounts to add the games to their PC library.
