'The Housemaid' film to be adapted into a stage play

Following its success on screen, the psychological thriller The Housemaid is expanding into a broader franchise with a newly announced stage play.

In a report by Variety, Lionsgate is now set to turn their hit film starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried into a play. It will be produced by Melting Pot, a British company that previously adapted the horror film Paranormal Activity for the theater, and playwright Bekah Brunstetter, who worked on Broadway’s The Notebook.

As of writing, however, details regarding the cast, premiere date, and theater venue have yet to be announced.

Jenefer Brown, Lionsgate’s president of global products and experiences, highlighted that The Housemaid has "all the elements for a successful stage adaptation."

"[It has] a blockbuster title, compelling characters, and a story full of twists and turns that builds tension and momentum in a way that naturally lends itself to the stage," she said.

"This project reflects how our hit films and IP can be transformed into novel experiences," she added.

Meanwhile, Melting Pot founder Simon Friend shared that they are looking to "heighten the intensity" of The Housemaid for its stage adaptation.

"When I first read The Housemaid, it was exhilarating. What occurred to me is how truly theatrical the story is, not only happening largely in a single, claustrophobic location, but the twisty elements which contemporize what has long worked in potboiler stage thrillers," he said.

Based on the 2022 novel by Freida McFadden, The Housemaid follows Millie Calloway, a young woman who takes on a live-in job for the wealthy Winchester family, only to find herself entangled in a household filled with secrets, manipulation, and unsettling discoveries.

With its success at the box office, a sequel to the film has now been greenlit for 2027, titled The Housemaid's Secret.

Sweeney will reprise her role for the follow-up, as well as Michele Morrone as landscaper Enzo. Joining them is Kirsten Dunst, who is known for her roles in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, Bring It On, Marie Antoinette, and more.
