'The Housemaid' sequel set for release December 2027; Kirsten Dunst joins cast
The Housemaid's Secret, a follow-up to 2025's sleeper hit The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney, is set to hit cinemas on Dec. 17, 2027. Kirsten Dunst will be joining the cast.
In the first film, Sweeney played convicted felon Millie Calloway, a live-in maid employed by a wealthy family who has secrets.
Reprising her role for the sequel, Sweeney's Millie will be taking a job "keeping house for a woman she's never allowed to see—only to discover the truth behind the locked door that threatens to expose secrets far darker than her own," as reported by Variety.
Returning with Sweeney for the sequel will be Michele Morrone as landscaper Enzo, as well as director Paul Feig, who will also produce The Housemaid's Secret.
Both films are based on bestselling novels by Freida McFadden.
Lionsgate, the studio that shot the R-rated suspense thriller, has plans to turn The Housemaid into a film franchise, as McFadden has more work waiting in the wings. Her third novel, The Housemaid is Watching, was released in 2024; the short story The Housemaid's Wedding came out in 2025.
Sweeney has been vocal about her desire to appear in sequels, as she told PEOPLE before the announcement of The Housemaid's Secret.
"I was such a huge fan of the books, so I would be just as happy as everyone else being able to see more Housemaids come to life and getting to explore more of Millie," she said.
In January, Feig talked about the franchise's potential sequels, expressing gratitude that McFadden had more of Millie's story waiting to be told on film.
As for Dunst's casting, the studio was all on board with the idea.
"It is a privilege to bring The Housemaid's next chapter to the screen with Kirsten Dunst. She is an icon. Her career reflects extraordinary range and fearlessness. Opposite the ever-magnetic Sydney Sweeney, she will be an electrifying force in a world where nothing is ever quite as it seems," said Erin Westerman, president of Lionsgate Studio.
The studio announced in January that The Housemaid's Secret had "been in development for the past few months."
