Taylor Swift and Blake Lively's friendship status revealed in court-unsealed texts
All is good in the Taylor Swift-Blake Lively friendship; their text messages prove it.
On Jan. 20, unsealed court documents obtained by E! News showed how the BFFs patched things up after their relationship hit a slump amid Lively's legal trouble with her It Ends With Us co-star and director Justin Baldoni.
One of the text exchanges showed Lively reaching out to Swift on Dec. 4, 2024. Although Swift's full name is not included in the texts, it is mentioned in the unsealed documents.
"I have no reason to ask, but I donno, I've been feeling like I should...is everything ok? I felt like a bad friend lately because I was such a sad sack who only talked about my own s--t for months. You were generous to not only be the key person there for me during all of it, but also to let me off the hook for being so in it," Lively wrote.
"I felt so stupid and like it sounded needy and awkward for everyone, especially bc [sic] I can't explain why I have this feeling. I do want to know everything is good, so I'm asking. I always want the opportunity to be a better friend if there's something I unintentionally did. I know how busy and taxed you are—physically, emotionally, practically, so I don't expect any more from you ever," she continued.
In response to Lively's messages, Swift, who was then about to wrap up her Eras Tour, told her friend, "You're not wrong," then followed it up with the assurance that it was "not a big deal."
"I think I'm just exhausted in every avenue of my life and in recent months had been feeling a little bit of a shift in the way you talk to me," she replied. "Yes, there has been a lot of Justin stuff but I've been through things like this before and I know how all consuming it is."
"It's more like... and I feel really bad saying anything about this because your texts have been so nice in their intent but your last few... it's felt like I was reading a mass corporate email sent to 200 employees. It feels awful to be in any way critical of any way you process what you've been going through but I just kinda miss my funny, dark, normal-speaking friend who talks to me as herself," Swift continued.
The Grammy winner then empathized with Lively.
"I know you feel attacked from all sides for ridiculous reasons, so you're feeling like you have to overly explain things... but it's me. That's just caused a little distance. And you don't need to apologize. Just come back, please," Swift wrote.
After playfully admitting that she had become "digitally paranoid," Lively admitted that she had "been texting like I'm writing. Not like me talking."
"Point is, I'm being a stupid paranoid weirdo and felt it but didn't know where or how or when. So thank you for telling me and for saying I don't need to apologize and for not making it a big deal. But I am sorry. To you," the actress wrote.
The friendship reportedly got strained during Lively and Baldoni's legal skirmishes.
Around the time of the It Ends With Us premiere in August 2024, rumors of a feud between Lively and Baldoni surfaced. In December 2024, Lively filed a complaint with the California Civil Rights Department against Baldoni, accusing him of sexual harassment on the film's set. She also claimed he coordinated a smear campaign against her. That same month, Lively formally sued Baldoni, his studio, and his PR team. Baldoni then countersued.
Swift's name was dragged into the mess when rumors swirled of Swift being subpoenaed in relation to the legal dispute. There were also reports about Swift witnessing a confrontation between Lively's husband Ryan Reynolds and Baldoni.
It prompted Swift's spokesperson to issue a statement denying the singer's involvement in any aspect of the film's production.
In May 2025, Baldoni's team dropped the subpoena against Swift.
Reynolds was reported to have encouraged Lively to reach out to Swift to mend things.
The friends first connected in 2015 and have been close ever since.
