TIMELINE: A look back at Julia Barretto and Gerald Anderson’s relationship
It’s official: after more than five years of being together, Julia Barretto and Gerald Anderson have broken up.
Their respective agencies confirmed the split on social media, releasing statements on Sept. 18 that the decision was mutual. Star Magic, representing Anderson, said the ex-couple is “grateful to their fans and friends for the love and support.” Meanwhile, Barretto's agency, Viva Artists Agency, asserted that recent speculations on the reason behind the breakup are “unfounded and baseless.”
Although Barretto and Anderson publicly confirmed their relationship in 2021, rumors had been circulating since 2019, following their onscreen romance in Between Maybes. Here’s a look back at their six years as a couple.
2019: Finding each other “between maybes”
The two actors were linked after starring in the Japan-set film Between Maybes, despite being in separate relationships at the time — Barretto with Joshua Garcia, and Anderson with Bea Alonzo.
A few months after the film’s release, Alonzo hinted on social media that Anderson was unfaithful and accused him of “ghosting.” Fans speculated that Anderson cheated on her with Barretto, which they both denied.
In a now-deleted Instagram post, Barretto said she wanted to “disassociate” herself from the breakup. “Their issues are entirely their own.” She also clarified that she and Garcia had called it quits four months before the rumors began.
Anderson responded to Alonzo’s “ghosting” claim, saying that he was “walking from a very unhealthy relationship,” and that no third party was involved.
March 2021: Going public
After a year of romance rumors, Anderson finally confirmed the relationship in an interview with Boy Abunda. "[We’re] very happy," he said.
That same week, Barretto posted a birthday greeting for the actor on Instagram, saying, “Everyday I celebrate you, but today I am extra grateful. Happy birthday, my love.” They were also seen in Zambales distributing basic commodities to 300 Aeta families with the Philippine Coast Guard.
December 2021: Anderson joins the Barrettos’ holidays
A vlog posted by Julia’s mother, Marjorie Barretto, revealed that Anderson spent Christmas Eve at the Barretto household. He even gifted Julia a Rolex watch, to which the excited actress said, “This is my first Rolex.”
May 2022: Ready to settle down?
In an interview with Boy Abunda, Barretto shared that she is ready to settle down and would say “yes” if Anderson proposed.
“I always tell him how lucky I feel that I am with somebody who can guide me in life in general,” she said. “Someone who can ground me, who can put sense in my head. I can talk to him about anything. He puts everything into perspective for me.”
Barretto expressed the same sentiments in one of Anderson’s vlogs the previous year, revealing that she envisioned starting a family in five years.
Anderson also said Barretto is “the one” for him, and he is similarly ready to settle down after they reach their career goals.
September 2023: Rumors of wedding bells
While marriage has always been on the table for the couple, Barretto shut down rumors of a secret wedding in 2023. “It's something to look forward to, pero ba't niyo ba kami minamadali?" she said at the Preview Ball, adding that they will only share it once they’re ready.
December 2023: Holidays with the family
Both Barretto and Anderson spent the holidays with each other’s families, with the pair flying to Los Angeles to be with Anderson’s father and brother. They shared romantic snaps on Instagram.
2024: Taking it slow
The couple is seen spending more family occasions together, including Claudia Barretto’s birthday. Anderson once again comments on taking their relationship to the next level: “Itong moment na ‘to, ‘yung moment niya ngayon, let her enjoy. Huwag nating madaliin.” Barretto was starring in Un/Happy For You with Garcia — their first movie together in four years.
June 2025: The pair denies breakup rumors
Speculations surfaced after fans noticed that the couple had not been posting photos of each other on social media. Anderson addressed the rumors on Julius Babao’s vlog, saying, “It’s either hiwalay kami, kasal kami, or may pinagdadaanan kami. Hindi ba pwedeng normal din na relationship?”
Barretto also shut down the rumors in a Magandang Buhay interview: “Hindi kailangan mag-overshare. Hindi dapat bawat galaw [namin], alam ng lahat. Siguro, that’s why they think [we broke up].”
September 2025: Barretto and Anderson part ways
The breakup was confirmed by the actors’ management teams. While reasons were not specified, both agencies mentioned that the breakup was mutually decided. Claudine Barretto, Julia’s aunt, shared the post on Facebook with the caption, “Mama is here Juls.”
As of writing, Barretto and Anderson have yet to comment.
