Lumpiang shanghai lands No. 2 spot on TasteAtlas 50 best street food list
Lumpiang shanghai, the crispy deep-fried snack that's considered a fixture in Filipino cuisine, is dubbed as among the world's best street food by aggregated food guide TasteAtlas.
Lumpiang shanghai ranked second in In TasteAtlas's Top 50 list posted Sept. 28, getting a score of 4.9 out of 5.0 based on user reviews.
TasteAtlas noted that the Filipino favorite evolved from Chinese spring rolls, whose version from capital city Shanghai is characterized by a savory filling of ground pork or beef, carrots, onions, various seasonings, and even shrimps.
Renowned food critic and historian Doreen Fernandez also wrote that lumpiang shanghai is a "Southeast Asian phenomenon obviously derived from the Chinese spring roll."
"This delicious and crispy snack is usually served accompanied by sweet and sour dipping sauce," TasteAtlas said, noting that it's not only sold at numerous street stalls but it's also served special and festive occasions.
Topping the list was Malaysia's roti canai, a pan-fried flatbread made with flour, water, eggs, and fat. It can be served on the side or torn into pieces and mixed with curry though it's often accompanied with savory fillings and ingredients as the star dish, the website noted.
Last March, TasteAtlas ranked lumpiang shanghai as among the best-rated food in Southeast Asia. It was also named as among the best dishes worldwide in 2021.
The website has recognized Philippine cuisine several times. Last Sept. 13, it named five varieties of Filipino pancit as among the best noodle dishes in the world.
The Philippines also placed 19th in TasteAtlas's list of 50 best cuisines worldwide for the month of June.
To date, the country's best-rated dishes on TasteAtlas include lumpiang shanghai, tortang talong, sinigang, inasal na manok, and daing na bangus.
