Celebrities who embodied 'The Garden of Time' at the 2024 Met Gala
The Met Gala's annual themes are always a test – some see a playground for creativity, others well, play it safe. While most celebs look amazing no matter what they wear, some attendees ignore the theme or opt for classic styles. But fortunately, some truly understand the assignment—and deliver at that!
This year’s Met Gala is themed The Garden of Time inspired by a short story written by J.G. Ballard in 1962 of the same title. Whereas the Costume Institute’s Spring exhibition is titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” which Vogue noted has nothing to do with the Disney princess story, but must be taken into consideration to grasp this year’s fashion direction.
So, how do we interpret this in fashion? Vogue editor and fashion historian Lilah Ramzi shared, “The most obvious interpretation would be to embrace the garden part of The Garden of Time. Think melancholic florals (as if moody florals aren’t moody enough).”
Held on Tuesday, May 7 (Philippine time), the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute hosted its annual fundraising gala where Jennifer Lopez, Chris Hemsworth, Zendaya, and Bad Bunny served as co-chairs.
Let’s put the spotlight on the attendees who impressed and did not miss their assignments!
Zendaya
Zendaya served as one of the co-chairs in this year’s Met Gala, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if she understood the assignment. She wore a royal blue and emerald green dress created by John Galliano based on a 1999 Dior dress.
Mona Patel
Indian entrepreneur Mona Patel captivated the carpet and became one of the crowd’s (aka internet) favorites. Mona donned a form-fitting dress adorned with a collection of moving butterflies, wrapping around her arms akin to opera gloves, while their wings gently flapped in a deliberate, unhurried rhythm.
Alia Bhatt
British actress Alia Bhatt proudly wore a stunning floral Sabyasachi sari for her red carpet look.
Gigi Hadid
Met Gala is not complete without Gigi Hadid. This may not be her most memorable look, but the American fashion model and TV personality correctly followed this year’s theme wearing a flowing white Thom Browne gown adorned with a pattern of yellow roses.
Sydney Sweeney
Sydney Sweeney shocked the carpet as she let go of her blonde hair for a bob “petit-noir wig” at this year’s Gala. She dazzled in a baby blue Miu Miu tulle gown embellished with flowers and blackthorns paired with leather gloves.
Elle Fanning
The Sleeping Beauty herself graced the red carpet wearing a Balmain sculptural transparent off-the-shoulder wrap dress. Elle starred in Maleficent where she played Aurora, and this look channels the ethereal beauty and gentleness of her character.
Nicki Minaj
Nicki Minaj did not disappoint with her bright yellow Marni mini dress adorned with colorful 3D flowers. The rapper completed her look with matching yellow heels and a purse.
Lizzo
The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter wore a “vase dress” as described by her designer. Embodying her interpretation of The Garden of Time, Lizzo wore a fitted dress adorned with sculpted flower petals, accompanied by a coordinating headpiece.
Demi Lovato
Queen Demi is back at the Met Gala! After 8 years, the pop star graced the red carpet wearing a Prabal Gurung silver gown embellished with flower ornaments.
Laufey
Laufey looked heavenly in her debut at this year’s Gala, wearing a baby pink Prabal Gung dress.
Odell Beckham Jr.
The first suit to make it on the list is worn by American footballer Odell Beckham Jr. Odell donned a black suit embroidered with tree branches and bird appliqués, and he completed the look with a diamond broach.
Amanda Seyfried
Amanda Seyfried channeled a mystical look by wearing a metallic dress embellished with flowers. The actress also showcased a fresh hairstyle, exchanging her usual bright locks for a sleek, metallic-silver style accessorized with a tiara to pair with her dress while sporting a vibrant fuchsia lip.
Karlie Kloss
Karlie Kloss bejeweled in her pink crystal-embellished Swarovski gown as she embodied the Garden of Time motif.
Ayo Edebiri
The beloved American actor debuted at the 2024 Met Gala wearing a Loewe floral backless dress. Ayo’s dress was draped in intricately hand-painted and hand-embroidered floral lace, adorned with 3D appliqué flowers to evoke the appearance of blooming.
Josh O'Connor
Josh O’Connor’s ensemble may look simple, but the subtle nod to the theme marked his spot on this list. Wearing a Loewe tuxedo, Josh completed his look with floral shoes designed with floral motifs.
Erykah Badu

Erykah Badu was radiant in red as she wore a Comme des Garcons dress. Erykah bloomed in her fit as floral and botanical motifs wrapped around the ruffled coat.
