Don't like Scorpios? Here's why they're one of the zodiac's most 'hated' signs
Do you have beef with Scorpios? You're not alone.
Scorpios are known for their intensity, mysterious nature, and strong personalities. They've earned quite a reputation, and it's not always a good one. But what is it about them that gets people talking? Could it be admiration disguised as dislike for some? And why does everything seem to change once you get to see their good side?
According to astrologer Gabriel Thoth, Scorpio is the most intense zodiac sign. "It’s ruled by Pluto in modern astrology, God of the Underworld, and Mars in traditional astrology, the God of War,” he explained to PhilSTAR L!fe.
Resti Santiago, a.k.a. Filipino astrologer, added that ancient astrologers like Vettius Valens “described Scorpio's shadow side in stark terms—labeling it tricky, base, covetous, and prone to deceit.”
“When a Scorpio person is unevolved, they have the tendency to be intensely vindictive, manipulative, and emotionally volatile while keeping their vulnerabilities hidden in the shadows,” said Thoth.
But some might not even really "hate" Scorpios after all. “When people say they do, they usually mean ‘I’m not used to their intensity, and it’s a bit overwhelming for me,’” he pointed out. "Scorpios understand pretty well the hidden dynamics of energy, and they use it to their advantage and for survival. They're a fixed water sign, which means their intensity is often rooted in emotional depth, self-protection, and a profound need for trust."

"Scorpios aren't secretive for the sake of hiding secrets," he noted. "They understand very well the power of vulnerability; hence, they are very selective about the people they allow into their inner world."
Easy to 'hate,' but hard not to love
Per Santiago, Scorpio is traditionally ruled by Mars, which is the planet of courage, drive, and fierce loyalty.
"These traits are evident in notable figures like pole vaulter EJ Obiena, who set records through relentless discipline, and historical figures like Generals Antonio Luna and Gregorio del Pilar, who demonstrated fierce valor and unwavering allegiance during the Philippine-American War,” he told L!fe.
In everyday life, he added, this Martian energy translates into someone who will fiercely defend their inner circle. “Scorpios make steadfast, protective, and deeply dependable friends,” he said.
According to Thoth, people usually end up loving the emotional depth of a Scorpio. "When a Scorpio exhibits evolved qualities, it’s so easy to become intensely attracted to the mystery they bring. They don’t show all their cards on the table, and people love being kept on edge. Scorpios are masters of mystery, and who doesn’t love a good mystery challenge?"
"An evolved Scorpio is usually very loyal—they'll even take a bullet for you—emotionally deep as the ocean, and spiritually in tune with the subtle energies of the Universe," he added.
But of course, winning their love and trust is far from easy. "It definitely doesn't happen overnight," stressed Santiago. "Because Scorpios guard their vulnerability carefully, genuine bonds require time, consistent loyalty, and emotional patience to take root."
Signs that bring out the best—and worst—in Scorpios
Scorpio's natural allies, per Santiago, include fellow water signs Cancer and Pisces. "All three prioritize deep emotional connection and speak the same intuitive language," he said.
They also vibe with earth signs—Capricorn, Virgo, and to an extent, its opposite sign Taurus—who "provide the grounding, structure, and pragmatic stability that water signs often crave."
Thoth particularly noticed his Capricorn friends getting along exceptionally well with Scorpios. "While they don’t share the same planetary rulership, these two signs have more in common than people might think," he explained. "Both are incredibly determined, strategic, and intentional about what they want. They’re not the type to beat around the bush or wander aimlessly trying to figure things out. More often than not, they already know what they want before they make their move. "
Meanwhile, Scorpios tend to clash with air signs: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius, as their "detached, intellectual approach can feel dismissive of Scorpios' emotional intensity," said Santiago. The same goes for dynamic fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), which can spark power struggles. "Leo in particular forms a square aspect to Scorpio, where competing desires for control and pride frequently create friction," he pointed out.
Santiago, however, reminded everyone of the importance of distinguishing signs from individuals. "The 12 zodiac signs represent twelve distinct archetypes of human experience rather than literal personalities. Calling Scorpio an 'unlikable' sign does not mean people born under it are inherently disliked; rather, the sign embodies specific archetypal traits that challenge people," he emphasized.
