Taiwanese mother keeps daughter's body in air-conditioned room for 6 years

For six years, a woman in Taiwan continuously ran her air conditioner to preserve her deceased daughter's body at home.

According to Sinchew Daily News, Lee, a 53-year-old woman, died six years ago in Ruifang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan.

Due to the daughter's wish to be buried seven years after her death, her 75-year-old mother kept her body in the air conditioner on for 24 hours throughout the year.

The discovery was made after a social worker received a report about the situation, which revealed that the mother could not continue paying the electricity bill due to financial struggles. This led her to admit that she had been keeping her daughter's body for several years.

On the other hand, reports said that the elderly woman seldom talked to her neighbors and thought she lived alone in the third-floor unit of a five-story apartment building about seven or eight years ago.

Xie Yongchang, head of the neighborhood residents' committee, had attempted to visit the older woman but found that the unit did not have a doorbell.

Local authorities ruled out the possibility of homicide after conducting an autopsy of the desiccated corpse, which was "coated with oil."

The ruling also took into account the mother's testimony regarding her daughter's religious beliefs and her wishes for her death arrangements.

Investigation is ongoing to further clarify the cause of death.
