As the conclave to elect the next pope draws near, cardinals have discussed some of the qualities that the 267th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church must possess.

In a report by the Vatican News, 173 Cardinals, including 130 Cardinal electors, participated in the 12th and final General Congregation to discuss matters surrounding the election of the next pope.

One subject they discussed was the qualities important for a future leader of the Church. They underscored that the new pope must be a "pontifex, a builder of bridges, a shepherd, a master of humanity, and the face of a Samaritan Church."

A pontifex is a member of a council of priests in ancient Rome. The term is rooted in the word "bridge-maker," or "path-maker."

Apart from these titles, the cardinals also seek a pope who embodies "mercy, synodality, and hope."

Other topics they discussed include the reforms of Pope Francis that need to be carried forward, such as "legislation on abuse, economic issues, the Roman Curia, synodality, work for peace, and care for creation."

Francis was well-loved by millions worldwide due to his refreshing and compassionate approach to leadership, his profound sense of humility, compassion, and dedication to social justice.

He has repeatedly called for greater attention to the needs of the poor, the homeless, and those who suffer from injustice and addressed the ongoing sexual abuse crisis within the Catholic Church head-on.

The late pontiff also consistently called for dignity and respect for LGBTQ+ individuals despite the Catholic Church being traditionally conservative on LGBTQ+ issues.

Francis died on April 21, aged 88, after suffering a stroke, coma and heart failure. He was laid to rest at the Santa Maria Maggiore basilica in Rome.

The conclave to elect his successor will begin on May 7.
