Here's what to expect at the Miss Universe 2022 coronation night

Are you ready to meet the new queen this Sunday?

After months of extensive training, photoshoots, and challenges, one among the 84 delegates in this year's edition of the Miss Universe pageant will finally be crowned this January 15 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

If you haven't got the slightest clue on what's going to happen, here's a brief rundown of what to expect on the much-anticipated event:

Who is going to host the show?

The first Miss Universe edition under Thailand-based JKN Global Group owned and founded by Anne Jakrajutatip will see the pageant in "a female lens."

Former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo and Jeannie Mae Jenkins will now fill in Steve Harvey's shoes as hosts, as the latter reportedly ended his five-year contract with the with the organization.

Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray and Emmy award winning television personality Zuri Hall will be joining them as backstage commentators.

Will there be any performers?

You can't have the queens gracing the runway without any live performances from music artists. For this year's coronation night, the organization opted to have singers who are based in New Orleans.

According to their Instagram post, the lineup includes rapper Big Freedia, hip-hop, jazz, and rock band Big Sam's Funky Nation, singer and songwriter Amanda Shaw, Grammy-nominated group Tank and the Bangas, and gospel artist Yolanda Adams.

Who will be the judges?

The selection committee that will be in charge of determining who advances to the pageant rounds and who is most deserving of the crown is comprised of ten women, and one of them is Pinoy skin care specialist Olivia Quido, who is also the chief executive officer and founder of O Skin Med Spa.

Her profile is an impressive one as she not only earned an award for being Woman of the Year, but she is also part of the Top 100 Filipinos in the United States.

Other members of the selection committee include:

  • Miss Universe 2010 winner Ximena Navarrete;
  • Rapper Big Freedia;
  • Miss Universe Trinidad and Tobago 1998 Wendy Fitzwilliam;
  • American sports journalist Emily Austin;
  • American television and radio host Mykra Dellanos;
  • Vice President of Growth Marketing & Merchandising at Roku Sweta Patel;
  • Former Miss USA Olivia Jordan;
  • Chief marketing officer at ImpactWayv Kathleen Ventrella;
  • Co-founder of Vyral Media Mara Martin
What is the event flow?

Following the preliminary competition that happened last January 12, the 84 delegates will be narrowed down to the Top 16, where they will once again walk in their swimsuit and evening gown attires. Among them, the Top Five queens will be chosen who will then be narrowed down to just three, before ultimately announcing the winner. 

Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Sandhu will crown her successor at the 71st Miss Universe pageant will be held at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, United States on January 15.
