Is Messenger shutting down? Here's the truth about Meta's update

Published Feb 19, 2026 9:00 pm

Messenger has recently found itself on the receiving end of misinformation after Meta announced that the Messenger website will no longer be available starting April this year.

In an advisory, Facebook's parent company stated that it will be pulling the plug on messenger.com, the official web browser version of its messaging service.

"After messenger.com goes away, you will be automatically redirected to use facebook.com/messages for messaging on a computer. You can continue your conversations there or on the Messenger mobile app," the statement read.

"If you currently use Messenger without a Facebook account, you can continue your conversations on the Messenger mobile app," it added.

Following the recent announcement and the closure of the standalone Messenger desktop apps for Windows and macOS last December 2025, social media has been abuzz with rumors that Messenger is shutting down.

However, the messaging service isn't going anywhere. The core service remains fully functional and accessible through the Facebook website and the mobile app.

Users who use the Messenger web browser without a Facebook account will need to create an account on Facebook or reactivate their account.
