Filipina tourist injured in train accident in New Taipei
A Filipina tourist was struck by a train while she was taking photos near a railroad track in Pingxi District, New Taipei.
The woman, a 36-year-old according to a Taiwan News report, was along Shifen Station when Taiwan Railway Train No. 4831 came and hit her outstretched arm. She fell backward and sustained injuries to her head, chest, and pelvis, per CNA.
She was treated by paramedics on site and brought to Keelung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. The injuries were said to be non-threatening.
The Manila Economic Cultural Office (MECO) wrote a statement about the accident, saying that the woman was alone but later joined a tour for the visit to Shifen Sky Lantern Old Street.
"Na-inform na din kaanak niya. She's stable and conscious but needs to undergo surgery because of her injuries," MECO chairperson Cheloy Garafil said, adding that the agency is closely monitoring her condition.
Additionally, the victim's husband is processing his travel documents to visit her in Taiwan.
MECO also reminded Filipino tourists to follow safety protocols to avoid similar accidents.
Police are also questioning Michelle for a suspected violation of Article 57 of the Railway Act, which states that pedestrians and vehicles "shall not intrude into/onto railway routes, bridges, and places inside tunnels and stations not intended for public use."
Violators face a fine between NT$10,000 (P18,000) to NT$50,000 (P89,000).
