Tim Curry's cause of death revealed

The cause of death of British actor Tim Curry has been revealed more than a week after his passing at age 80.

According to documents obtained by PEOPLE from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, Curry died from coronary artery disease. The document also listed a history of stroke and kidney cancer as significant conditions that contributed to his death, although neither was identified as the underlying cause.

Curry died peacefully at his home in Toluca Lake, LA on Aug. 25, per authorities.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Curry suffered a major stroke in 2012, which significantly affected his mobility and led him to step back from much of his acting work. He continued working primarily on voiceover projects in the years that followed.

During a 2025 screening celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Curry gave an update on his health and his struggles with mobility.

“I still can’t walk, which is why I’m in this silly chair, and that’s very limiting,” he said at the time. “So I won’t be singing and I won’t be dancing very soon. I still have real problems with my left leg.”

Curry rose to international fame as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show and its 1975 film adaptation, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He went on to star in Annie, Clue, It, and Muppet Treasure Island, earning three Tony Award and two Laurence Olivier Award nominations throughout his career.
