Trump to act on immigration, gender on Day 1

Donald Trump is set to sign executive orders hours after he's sworn into office.

Ahead of his inauguration, the 47th US president said he would ink a slew of orders tackling issues such as immigration, gender, environment, and more.

In his inaugural address, Trump said that his return to office would mark the beginning of the "golden age" of America.

Mass deportation

Part of the businessman-turned-politician's Day 1 agenda is declaring a national emergency at the country's southern border.

"All illegal entry will immediately be halted and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from where they came," he said.

Trump added that he would send troops to the border to "repel the disastrous invasion" of the US.

Known for his anti-immigration campaign, Trump wants to invoke a 1798 law called the Alien Enemies Act to target foreign gang members in the country.

The said act, used in wartime, allows the president to detain or deport non-citizens considered an enemy of the US.

Closing the border

American authorities reported that they shut down outgoing president Joe Biden's legal entry program, CBP One, that allowed migrants to enter the country legally by scheduling an appointment. US Customs and Border Protection said existing appointments have been canceled, effective Jan. 20.

Additionally, Trump is poised to end birthright citizenship—which is enshrined in the Constitution—granting anyone born in the US the right to an American passport.

The "Remain in Meixco" policy would also be enforced, barring people seeking asylum from entering the country until their application has been decided.

Gender and diversity

In his address, Trump vowed to halt diversity, equity, and inclusion policies in the federal government and corporate world. 

"I will also end the government policy of trying to socially engineer race and gender into every aspect of public and private life," he said.

The 78-year-old added that the US government will only recognize two genders, male and female.

This would be a step back from the Biden administration's 2022 move allowing non-binary, intersex, and gender non-conforming individuals to indicate their gender as X on their US passports.

Revoking EV mandate

Trump eyes to reverse more directives put in place by the Biden administration as the new president is poised to revoke the electric vehicle mandate to "save the auto industry."

"You'll be able to buy the car of your choice. We will build automobiles in America again at a rate that nobody could have dreamt possible just a few years ago," he said.

Earlier in his speech, Trump said he would declare national energy emergency to boost production of oil and gas and lower costs for consumers.

"America will be a manufacturing nation once again, and we have something that no other manufacturing nation will ever have, the largest amount of oil and gas of any country on Earth, and we are going to use it," he stated. "We will drill, baby, drill."

Trump, who previously said he doubted a report made by his government on the harmful effects of climate change, is set to end the Green New Deal—policies addressing the climate crisis.

A Trump official speaking earlier in the day said that the president and his allies would use the authority to rapidly approve new oil, gas, and electricity projects that typically take years to permit.

The first convicted felon to occupy the White House, Trump won the presidency for a second time in 2024 polls. He beat out outgoing Vice President Kamala Harris.
