Manila is the 5th riskiest city for tourists—report
Manila emerged as one of the top riskiest cities that tourists can visit, according to a new report from global financial platform Forbes Advisor.
Based on their report that covers 60 cities from around the world, the capital and chief city of the Philippines took the fifth spot among places that are risky for tourists, having a score of 91.49 out of 100.
Forbes Advisor gave this score after analyzing the city across seven key metrics, namely, Crime Risk (level of crime), Personal Security Risk (crime, violence, terrorist threats, natural disasters), Health Security Risk (level and quality of healthcare services), Infrastructure Security Risk (quality of city infrastructure), and Digital Security Risk (ability to freely use the internet without fear of privacy violations).
The other two metrics include Travel safety rating, which is data coming from the United States Department of State, and Natural disaster risk, which reflects vulnerability to natural disasters.
Manila had a score of 9, 5, 7, 9, and 12 in the first five categories, respectively. The ranking for each metric is measured on a scale of 1 to 60, with 1 representing the worst performance in that metric.
The city of Caracas in Venezuela took the top spot on the list, having a score of 100. This was followed by Karachi in Pakistan, Yangon in Myanmar, and Lagos in Nigeria.
After Manila, the cities of Dhaka, Bangladesh; Bogota, Colombia; Cairo, Egypt; Mexico City; and Quito, Ecuador follow suit.
Meanwhile, Singapore was named the safest city for travelers, earning a score of 0 out of 100. Forbes Advisor cited it as having the best travel safety rating from the US State Department and having the lowest natural disaster risk.
It was also the second lowest in terms of health security risk, infrastructure security risk, and digital security risk, reflecting the quality and availability of these services.
The cities of Tokyo in Japan and Toronto in Canada were subsequently regarded as the second and third safest city around the globe, respectively. After them are Sydney, Australia; Zurich, Switzerland; and Copenhagen, Denmark.
