From overseas Filipinos to global enterprises, a legacy of connection
At 80, Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan’s vision continues to shape PLDT Global’s role in empowering overseas Filipino communities and enabling cross-border growth.
As MVP marks his 80th birthday, his legacy is best measured not only in the institutions he has helped build, but in the lives those institutions continue to connect—across borders, across industries, and across generations of Filipinos.
At the heart of this legacy is a vision shaped by personal experience. Having spent more than two decades in Hong Kong, MVP understands the realities of Filipinos living and working abroad. His time there, he once reflected, left a lasting imprint: “The lessons that Hong Kong taught me about business and about life fill me with sublime gratitude I cannot express enough.”

This perspective continues to guide PLDT Global’s mission: to serve as a lifeline for Filipinos living overseas, enabling them to remain closely connected to their families, communities, and essential services back home. More than strategy, this reflects MVP’s belief that digital solutions must address the everyday realities of Filipinos abroad while strengthening their connection to the Philippines.
For more than 25 years, this vision has shaped PLDT Global’s journey alongside overseas Filipinos. What began as a provider of legacy communication services has evolved into a digital enabler, delivering relevant and increasingly sophisticated solutions that respond to the needs of Filipinos living overseas. This includes not only connectivity, but also programs that support education and entrepreneurship—reflecting a long-standing commitment to uplift Filipino communities beyond basic communication services.

In 2025, MVP received the Gintong Alon Leadership Award from the Philippine Association of Hong Kong—a poignant return to the city where his career began nearly five decades ago. From his early days as a young banker in Central to building First Pacific from a modest office, Hong Kong has long been central to his journey.

Accepting the award with characteristic humility, he dedicated it to the millions of overseas Filipinos whose contributions sustain both families and the nation. “You are our country’s bright lights of hope—worthy of emulation and valued for your immense contribution.”
Standing by Filipinos in moments that matter
Under his guidance, PLDT Global is inspired to move beyond connectivity, especially in critical moments. Under MVP’s leadership, the company has provided free calls to the Philippines via Smart Virtual Number for Filipinos affected by global crises, from earthquakes in Taiwan, crises in Israel, to the Hong Kong Tai Po fire incident and the recent conflict in the Middle East, among many others—ensuring that even in times of uncertainty, Filipinos remain connected to those who matter most.

This commitment extends to everyday support. PLDT Global has enabled free 24/7 access to the OWWA-DMW 1348 hotline and zero-rated calls to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking's 1343 Actionline, working in close coordination with government partners to help Filipinos abroad connect with critical services, including support for victims of human trafficking. Back home, PLDT Global has also contributed to the rollout of critical technologies such as NGA911 in the country, helping strengthen public safety infrastructure.
Platforms like TinBo (Tindahan ni Bossing) further empower them to care for their families beyond remittances, offering digital tools that address real, day-to-day needs. Complementing this is Vortex, a digital distribution platform designed to help local and international brands scale efficiently. By enabling faster integration and multi-channel deployment, Vortex helps businesses accelerate their go-to-market strategies and expand their reach across global Filipino audiences.
Beyond immediate support, MVP has also championed long-term empowerment. Through collaborations with the Department of Migrant Workers and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, PLDT Global supports repatriated Filipinos and their families with digital skills and livelihood opportunities to help them reintegrate into the community. Complementing these efforts are initiatives with the PLDT-Smart Foundation that provide access to college education support and entrepreneurship programs, enabling not only overseas Filipino workers but also their families to benefit.
Driving global connectivity for enterprises
While deeply committed to serving global Filipinos, MVP’s vision equally extends to building a globally competitive digital ecosystem. Under his leadership, PLDT Global has grown into a trusted partner for enterprises worldwide, supporting hyperscalers, global carriers, BPOs, and multinational businesses with resilient, secure, and scalable connectivity solutions, as well as representing the Philippines in global economic and trade discussions—extending MVP’s legacy beyond business into shaping the country’s global presence.
These efforts are anchored in a broader mission of nation-building—establishing advanced business solutions that have helped attract international investments, open doors to local employment, and contribute to economic growth. Through PLDT Global’s initiatives, the Philippines continues to strengthen its position as a strategic hub for digital services and innovation.
Anchored in his vision of a connected, competitive, and compassionate digital nation, the PLDT Group continues to invest in critical infrastructure—from subsea cables to fiber networks and data centers—helping position the Philippines as a key digital hub in the Asia-Pacific region. This commitment, to people and to progress, reflects MVP’s leadership.
As MVP turns 80, his leadership continues to inspire a singular purpose: building connections that endure—uplifting communities, strengthening enterprises, and ensuring that Filipinos, wherever they may be, are never far from home.
