The Directors' Guild of the Philippines (DGPI) called for the protection of creative freedom and the safety of filmmakers after Cinemalaya canceled screenings of Lost Sabungeros due to "security concerns."

The organization released a statement on Aug. 15 expressing their support for filmmakers bringing important stories to light.

"In the wake of security concerns for public safety surrounding the screening venue of Lost Sabungeros at the 20th Cinemalaya Film Festival, we stand resolute in our commitment to creative freedom and the pursuit of truth," Mark Meily, DGPI president said.

"We are deeply concerned by the intimidation tactics employed by parties that seek to stifle the voice of filmmakers. The recent disruption, which resulted in the unfortunate cancellation of the screening of Lost Sabungeros for public safety reasons is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by those who dare to challenge the entrenched through their art."

Meily added that the safety of creatives is paramount and challenges faced by the GMA documentary will be conquered through solidarity and collective vigilance.

"It is through the courage to confront uncomfortable truths and address societal issues that we contribute to a more informed and empathetic world. In the face of adversity, we must hold steadfast to our commitment to creativity and the pursuit of truth."

What happened to Lost Sabungeros?

Cinemalaya announced the cancelation of Lost Sabungeros screenings on Aug. 4. The festival did not disclose what "safety concerns" prompted the axing.

Lost Sabungeros, a documentary film by GMA Public Affairs and GMA Pictures, investigates the disappearance of over 30 sabungeros who have been abducted in various incidents since 2021. Three whistleblowers come forward to share what they know about the crimes allegedly committed by the abducted men.

The film's director, Bryan Brazil, told GMA News Online on Aug. 8 that he and his team were powerless over the cancellation.

"Masakit ‘yun para sa team at lalo sa characters naming patuloy na lumalaban. Wala rin namin kaming laban sa pag-cancel sa amin, decision nila ‘yun. I hope hindi itong maging precedent lalo na sa independent filmmakers na gumagawa ng mga pelikulang nagpapamulat at mapagpalaya," he said.
