Will the zombie apocalypse K-drama ‘Happiness’ get a season 2?

Published Apr 28, 2022 11:45 am

The apocalyptic K-Drama Happiness which stars Han Hyo Joo and Park Hyung Sik, is currently making headlines again after landing on Netflix this month.

The thrilling zombie series which arrived shortly after the hype of the K-zombie series All Of Us Are Dead, is currently the top series in the Philippines for the second straight week.

Happiness is the No. 1 show in the Philippines for the second week.

It has also made it to the Global Top 10 in TV in 26 countries on Netflix, including Singapore, Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Australia and New Zealand. According to Netflix Top 10 figures, the series has been watched for 10.83 million hours for the week of April 18 to 24, 2022.

Initially released in South Korean network TvN last November 2021, the 12-part episode series depicts the story of an unknown virus linked to an experimental drug for treating COVID-19 that causes a zombie outbreak in an apartment building.

Happiness differs from other zombie series, as the real monsters in the story are not the zombies, but the various tenants driven to desperation for food and water because of the lockdown. The series reflects a lot of realities during the recent global lockdowns as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the stark class divisions seein in other Korean films like Parasite. The series also offers a more thrilling take on the romance angle compared to other popular K-dramas.

When the series originally wrapped up its final episodes, a source from TvN confirmed that Happiness would conclude with just one season.

"Happiness has never reviewed or discussed a seasonal system, Therefore, it will end with episode 12 as scheduled," according to the network spokesperson as reported by entertainment website Pinkvilla back in December 2021.

But with more people watching the series now, it's only natural for people to hope for a Happiness Season 2. Many netizens are speculating online that a second season could be in the works now that the show has landed on the streaming giant Netflix.

Despite the ending of the first season, fans believe the series can still be extended for more seasons and that the story still has potential for many new twists which could keep the viewers engaged.

While Korean dramas that are not Netflix originals are rarely renewed for multiple seasons, fans are hopeful for a Happiness Season 2 given Netflix’s track record for renewing series that become hits for multiple seasons for the global audience.

Squid Game, which was originally planned as only one season was renewed after pressure from viewers.

But as it stands, there has been no official confirmation on Happiness Season 2. Stay tuned for updates.
