'The Squid Game universe has just begun': Netflix confirms 'Squid Game' season 2
It's official! Netflix's 2021 breakout hit Squid Game will be getting a second season.
The South Korean survival drama debuted on the streaming platform on September last year and rose to the top of the charts, raking in 1.65 billion viewing hours in less than a month.
According to Variety, Netflix co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos confirmed the news during the streaming giant's fourth-quarter earnings interview. "The Squid Game universe has just begun," he said.
In November 2021, director Hwang Dong-hyuk also said the series will be returning for a second season.
"It's in my head right now. I'm in the planning process currently," he told the Associated Press. "There's been so much pressure, so much demand, and so much love for a second season, so I almost feel like you leave us no choice."
Dong-hyuk also confirmed that main character Gi-hun will be back. Last we saw Player 456, he won the games and took home the 45.6 billion won grand prize. But instead of boarding the plane to see his daughter, Gi-Hun looks to be on the hunt to find who's running the games. "He will do something for the world," Dong-hyuk said.
In the months after its release, Squid Game made history as the first Korean series and first non-English-language series to be nominated in the Screen Actors Guild Awards. O Yeong-su, who plays Player 001/Oh Il-nam, also became the first Korean to win a Golden Globe for best supporting actor.
