Barney just had a makeover!

Mattel announced the franchise relaunch of the beloved purple dinosaur on Monday, Feb. 13. “Mattel will relaunch Barney to a new generation with a brand-new animated series, set to debut globally in 2024," the multinational toy manufacturing and entertainment company said in a statement.

Still catering to preschool children, Barney and Friends will devote itself to teaching kids about “love, community, and encouragement” through music-filled adventures. The company also shared its “comprehensive revitalization” of the Barney brand, creating content "across television, film, and YouTube content as well as music and a full range of kids’ products including toys, books, clothing, and more.”

“Barney’s message of love and kindness has stood the test of time,” said Josh Silverman, Mattel’s Chief Franchise Officer and Global Head of Consumer Products.

“We will tap into the nostalgia of the generations who grew up with Barney, now parents themselves, and introduce the iconic purple dinosaur to a new generation of kids and families around the world across content, products, and experiences," he added.

For his part, Fred Soulie—Senior Vice President and General Manager of Mattel Television—highlighted the importance of helping Barney resonate with kids even in modern times. “In creating the new series, it was important to us that we properly reflect the world that kids today live in so that the series can deliver meaningful lessons about navigating it.”

“With our modern take on Barney, we hope to inspire the next generation to listen, care, and dream big. We think that parents, many of whom will fondly remember the original Barney from their own childhoods, will love the show, too,” he added.

Barney and his dino-pals Baby Bop, BJ, and Riff are famous for their catchy songs, games, and adventures. Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, and Never Have I Ever star Jaren Lewison used to be part of the show as it also features various child stars.
