It was two years ago that The Queen's Gambit was announced to be getting its own musical adaptation. Now, fans of the hit Netflix series have more reasons to look forward to the show, as singer-songwriter Mitski has been confirmed to write its music and lyrics.

The musical's producer, Level Forward, made the announcement on Wednesday, Nov. 15, via Instagram. "Announcing Academy Award-nominated and internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter Mitski as the composer and lyricist of The Queen’s Gambit musical!" it captioned the post.

The Queen's Gambit musical is Mitski's next big project following her Oscar nomination for her song This Is a Life in the 2022 Academy Award-winning film Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Mitski revealed in Level Forward's post that she considers working on the play a great honor, having been a fan of Netflix's popular series herself.

“Before Level Forward even brought the idea of making a musical of The Queen’s Gambit, I was a fan of the Netflix show, and an even greater fan of the original novel,” Mitski is quoted as saying by Level Forward.

“So I was already determined to be a member of this team. And then I met Eboni and Whitney, and my determination grew tenfold! I absolutely had to be a part of this! I am ecstatic to get to work with all of these amazing creatives, who’ve each built beautiful and unique repertoires of their own," she added.

Producing the musical alongside Mitski is playwright Eboni Booth and director Whitney White. Its cast and world premiere date has yet to be revealed, according to Deadline.

The popular series was adapted by Netflix from Walter Tevis' critically acclaimed novel published in 1983. It centers on orphan-turned-chess prodigy Beth Harmon, played by Anya Taylor-Joy.

The series became the streamer's biggest scripted limited show after it was watched by more than 62 million households in its first month alone.
