Save the date: 'Frozen The Broadway Musical' is coming to PH next year
Do you want to build a snowman...in Manila?
9Works Theatrical will be staging Disney's Frozen The Broadway Musical in April 2027 at The Proscenium Theater in Rockwell, Makati.
In a teaser posted on social media on Monday, Aug. 17, the theater company shared what was "Up next..." on their playbill, running a few chords of the musical as a hint.
No other details about the Manila production are available as of yet.
This is the third Asian adaptation of the Broadway musical, following Singapore and Japan.
The musical has had a Filipino working on it from the beginning: Filipino-American Robert Lopez and his wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez wrote the music and lyrics for both the film and its Broadway adaptation.
Frozen was a film first, coming out in cinemas in November 2013. It later premiered on Broadway in March 2018.
The musical follows orphans Anna and her older sister Elsa, who is tasked to rule over Arendelle. But Elsa's power of setting things on ice makes it difficult for her to do so, which sets off the story. For good measure, Disney also throws in a talking and singing snowman, a reindeer with human expressions, and a theme song, Let It Go, originally sung by Idina Menzel, that peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2014.
As is the norm for musical adaptations of films, the Broadway production of Frozen features several songs not included in the film.
If you'd like to whet your appetite, Frozen: The Hit Broadway Musical, filmed live on stage, is currently streaming on Disney+.
9works Theatrical is a theater company in Manila that has staged numerous local musicals, including Ricky Lee's Himala Isang Musikal, Eto Na! Musikal nAPO! featuring music by the APO Hiking Society, and Liwanag sa Dilim, with music by Rico Blanco.
The company's Broadway adaptations include Jonathan Larson's two hits Tick, Tick...Boom! and Rent, as well as A Christmas Carol and The Bodyguard.
