'Liwanag sa Dilim,' a musical featuring the songs of Rico Blanco, to be staged in March 2025
Filipino music legend Rico Blanco’s songs will take center stage in the highly awaited jukebox musical Liwanag sa Dilim, premiering in March 2025.
The production is set to celebrate Blanco's artistry, capturing his music’s "essence of hope, resilience, and love."
The musical, a project of 9 Works Theatrical, is an OPM-inspired hit musical like Eto Na! Musikal nAPO! and Himala: Isang Musikal. It is directed and written by Robbie Guevara, who is similarly known for his award-winning musicals including Once on This Island, Grease, La Cage aux Folles, Tick, Tick... Boom! and Rent, among others.
It will be staged at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati City.
The production announcement in September was met with enthusiasm, particularly during a public unveiling featuring Kapuso Pop Rocker Anthony Rosaldo. His performance during the staging of Once on This Island heightened the audience's anticipation.
Rosaldo sang the titular track, Liwanag sa Dilim, together with Kapuso Soul Balladeer Garrett Bolden and Jordan Andrews, who played Agwe and the Storyteller in Once on This Island, respectively.
Further details such as ticket selling period, ticket prices, show dates and the musical casts have yet to be announced.
The production for Liwanag sa Dilim was already finished in 2019. 9Works Theatrical had planned to announce its staging a year after but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2020, Blanco released a "quarantine version" of the classic Rivermaya hit, Liwanag sa Dilim, to help raise funds for frontliners amid the pandemic
Blanco also released a reimagined version of the band's classics Kisapmata and You’ll Be Safe Here earlier this year.
