Bok bok b*tch! Crazy Rich Asians is officially returning—and this time, it’s coming to the small screen.

HBO announced on Friday that the blockbuster film will continue as an HBO Original Series, with production set to begin next year.

The television adaptation brings back key original cast members, including Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Emmy winner Ronny Chieng, with Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh set to appear in a recurring role. Executive producers include co-writer Adele Lim, director Jon M. Chu, Nina Jacobson, and Brad Simpson.

"It’s a Crazy Rich family reunion! This series is the sequel we’ve been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we get eight episodes to delve into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan’s brilliant books," Lim shared. "Getting to work with the original creative team, supported by the vision of HBO and Warner Bros. Television, has been a dream. Our writers' room is humming, and we can’t wait to share what we’ve come up with."

Author Kevin Kwan expressed equal excitement about expanding the universe for television. "Our incredible fans around the world have been patiently waiting for this, and it will be worth the wait! Seeing my stories and characters come to life with the breathing room of an HBO series is a dream come true," Kwan told Deadline.

Reflecting on the original movie's impact, Chu noted on his Instagram Stories how the cast has become "movie stars, superheroes, arena-filling performers, and even an Oscar winner." "So bringing everyone back together feels like coming home."

"It’s been incredible watching audiences make this movie part of their lives, from mahjong nights to becoming the ultimate airplane movie. Finally, I get to answer the question I’ve been asked almost every day for eight years: 'When are we getting the sequel?' Well… bok bok b*tch, we’re back," he wrote.

Crazy Rich Asians is based on the novel by Kevin Kwan, which follows the romance between Rachel Chu (Wu), an unassuming economics professor, and her boyfriend, Nick Young (Golding)—who turns out to be a high-society heir and one of Asia’s most eligible bachelors.

The film was a box office phenomenon upon its 2018 theatrical release, grossing over $239 million worldwide against a $30 million budget.

A TV adaptation was first reported last year with few details, but Max (now HBO Max) has since confirmed that the upcoming drama will draw inspiration from Kwan’s books China Rich Girlfriend, Rich People Problems, and Lies and Weddings.
