WATCH: Tech troubles toys in first 'Toy Story 5' trailer
The advancement of smart technology isn't sparing even playthings in the first official trailer for Toy Story 5.
Released on Thursday, Feb. 19, the trailer begins with an unexpected wedding between Forky and his newfound equal: a plastic knife.
However, the celebration is cut short by the arrival of Bonnie’s newest would-be obsession: Lilypad, a frog-themed smart tablet that quickly captures her attention.
"Ha, extinction. Not again," Rex the dinosaur toy groans, as the franchise revisits its classic theme of toys fearing replacement.
Jessie the cowgirl confronts the newcomer gadget, accusing it of replacing social interaction with screen time. In typical Gen Z fashion, Lilypad listens but doesn't bat an eye before casually showcasing her voice-recording and translation capabilities to an agitated Jessie, proving she's "always listening."
Meanwhile, Woody—now on a mission to rescue old toys—gets Jessie’s radio call for help. “Toys are for play. But tech… is for everything,” the wise old cowboy says before returning to help the group, sporting a red hanky poncho and noticeably faded hair paint.
Buzz greets him with a laser-ready standoff straight out of the original film—before pulling him into a heartfelt hug
From there, chaos ensues as the toys find a way to confront their highly advanced rival in crazy, inventive ways only toys know how.
Original voice actors Tom Hanks (Woody), Tim Allen (Buzz), and Joan Cusack (Jessie) are returning in the fifth installment of the 1995 animated film franchise slated for a June 19 release.
