Netflix drops first look at Guillermo Del Toro's horror series 'Cabinet of Curiosities'

Acclaimed Mexican film director Guillermo del Toro is known for imbuing horror and fantasy in his works, brought about by his fascination with monsters. So it's no wonder that he's working on a new series that features ghoulish creatures along with several other renowned directors.

Netflix dropped a special first look at Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities, a horror anthology series based on several short stories by acclaimed authors. It contains a collection of eight twisted and haunting tales that attempt to challenge the genre of horror, with two of them being del Toro's original pieces.

In the video, viewers get to see a few glimpses of the spine-chilling creatures that await in the stories as well as behind-the-scenes glances at how the team achieved the design.

However, in a terrifying twist, del Toro is not going to be the one to helm the episodes as he instead serves as the producer and presenter of each story. He had hand-picked a list of directors to deliver the morbid tales, all of whom have crafted their own distinguished horror films.

"Cabinet of Curiosities is a show that I've always wanted to make. In this anthology, we gave ownership of each episode to the directors," del Toro said.

He continued. "Each of the episodes has a whole world. They present you with different delights, some are savory, some are sweet. You get a surprise from each of the bites."

The Pan's Labyrinth director shared that he wanted to create beautiful and practical creatures "with all the artistry that goes into creating a great monster".

"We achieved some of the most remarkable images in the series. With Cabinet of Curiosities, what I'm trying to say is 'Look, the world is beautiful and horrible at exactly the same time'," del Toro said.

Here is the lineup of stories and their directors:

  1. The Autopsy - David Prior (The Empty Man)
  2. The Outside - Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night)
  3. The Viewing - Panos Cosmatos (Mandy)
  4. Dreams in the Witch House - Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight)
  5. Lot 36 - Guillermo Navarro (Hannibal)
  6. Pickman's Model - Keith Thomas (The Vigil)
  7. Graveyard Rats - Vincenzo Natali (Splice)
  8. The Murmuring - Jennifer Kent (The Babadook)

The series stars Eric André, Ben Barnes, Sofia Boutella, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Essie Davis, Crispin Glover, Rupert Grint, Andrew Lincoln, Kate Micucci, and Charlyne Yi.

Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities will not be releasing its episodes all at once. Instead, it will be releasing two episodes each day for four days, starting on Oct. 25. By Oct. 28, all of the eight episodes will be available to watch—perfect for streaming on the spookiest holiday of the year.
