WATCH: It's Miles vs. Army of Spider-people in new 'Across the Spider-Verse' trailer
The stakes are getting high for Miles Morales as the new trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse sees him facing off against an army of other Spider-people led by Miguel O'Hara, otherwise known as Spider-Man 2099.
The nearly three-minute trailer, released on April 4, first explores how Miles seems to be struggling on how to balance his responsibilities as a web-slinging superhero and his life as a teenager trying to ace his classes.
But his life is thrown into even more disarray when one of his allies from the first film, Gwen Stacy, who is also the Spider-Woman of her universe, invites him to help her complete a mission to save every universe of Spider-People from a mysterious new villain who could cause a catastrophic disaster. Their quest eventually leads them to the a place called the Multiverse, where Miles meets more of his friendly neighborhood variations.
The trailer teases the appearance of Hobart "Hobie" Brown aka Spider-Punk, a punk-rock version of the superhero, as well as Pavitr Prabhakar aka Spider-Man India, an alternate version of Spider-Man who lives in India.
The film also introduces Mayday, Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson's daughter who has also inherited his spider powers.
Leading the so-called "Spider-Force" is Spider-Man 2099, a version that came from an futuristic universe set in the year 2099. Despite essentially being on the same team, Miles and Miguel come into conflict, along with the other Spider-People, with the cause of their confrontation still unknown.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse serves as the sequel to 2018's Into the Spider-Verse, which was highly-acclaimed by critics due to its unique animation style that combines computer animation with hand-drawn comic book techniques. It eventually won Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards.
The sequel will have Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson, Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya, and Oscar Isaac lending their voices to the characters.
The film will premiere in movie theaters in the Philippines this May 31.
