Hello, McDreamy: Patrick Dempsey is PEOPLE Magazine's 2023 Sexiest Man Alive
Patrick Dempsey of Grey's Anatomy fame isn’t called McDreamy for no reason. He’s been named PEOPLE Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive of 2023.
The American actor, who has appeared in the magazine over the years, is gracing its November cover.
“I’m glad it’s happening at this point in my life,” the 57-year-old told PEOPLE in the cover story. “It’s nice to have the recognition, and certainly my ego takes a little bump, but it gives me the platform to use it for something positive.”
He said he was “completely shocked” upon learning the news, prompting him to laugh since he thought it was a joke.
“I’ve always been the bridesmaid!” he said. “I’d completely forgotten about it and never even contemplated being in this position. So my ego is good.”
Dempsey also joked about having merchandise celebrating the new title, like bumper stickers, shirts, and posters.
The Grey's Anatomy star famously portrayed neurosurgeon Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd in the medical drama series, as well as divorce attorney slash modern Prince Charming Robert Philip in Disney’s Enchanted movies.
He also starred in movies like Can’t Buy Me Love (1987), Loverboy (1989), Scream 3 (2000), Made of Honor (2008), and Valentine’s Day (2010). He portrays racing driver Piero Taruffi in the upcoming biopic Ferrari.
Dempsey is also a sports car and vintage car collector and participates in auto racing occasionally.
He founded the Dempsey Center, which supports cancer patients and their loved ones in honor of his late mother.
He’s married to makeup artist Jillian Dempsey, 57. They share three kids, 21-year-old Talula and 16-year-old twins Sullivan and Darby.
Last year, Captain America star Chris Evans held the title of the magazine’s sexiest man alive.
