H.E.R. goes OPM in NYC.
The Filipino-American Grammy Award winner was seen singing the OPM classic Maging Sino Ka Man during Filipino restaurant Kalye's karaoke night, dubbed Kalyeoke, in New York City.
"When @hermusicofficial makes a special guest appearance at Kalyeoke," Kalye wrote in its post sharing a clip of H.E.R. singing the ballad written and first recorded by Filipino singer-songwriter Rey Valera in 1979, and popularized by Sharon Cuneta in the 1990s.
H.E.R. sang it with confidence, at one point even inviting other diners to sing with her.
Among the social media users who left comments on Kalye's post was Cuneta's daughter KC Concepcion, who briefly wrote, "Awww!!" tagging H.E.R. and leaving several star emojis.
Spotify also piped up with a comment, "POV: you picked the right karaoke spot."
H.E.R. was born Gabriella Wilson. She chose to be known as H.E.R., an acronym for Having Everything Revealed, as her career was picking up.
She has had 25 Grammy nominations, winning five of them, including for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for Fight For You, which was used for the 2021 film Judas and the Black Messiah. H.E.R. won an Academy Award for the same track under Best Original Song.
The singer, whose mother Agnes was born in Nueva Ecija, has been outspoken about her pride in her Filipino roots, especially OPM. In an interview with GMA's 24 Oras in 2021, she shared how Maging Sino Ka Man was her go-to Filipino song.
H.E.R. will be featured alongside other Pinoy artists in the upcoming DreamWorks animated film Forgotten Island, which tells the story of two best friends who get stranded on an island inhabited by Filipino mythological creatures. She will be voicing one of the two main characters alongside Liza Soberano, with Lea Salonga, Dolly de Leon, and Fil-Ams Jo Koy and Manny Jacinto rounding out the cast. The soundtrack will also be a showcase of Filipino talent, including songs by H.E.R., Salonga, BINI, SB19, and Sophia Laforteza of the global girl group KATSEYE.
