Nintendo discontinues Gold Points reward program on Switch eShop

Published Feb 19, 2025 5:03 pm

Attention, gamers! Nintendo announced that it will soon end its Gold Points reward program on its eShop.

These points are earned by users after they purchase physical and digital games as well as downloadable content for the Nintendo Switch. The rewards then can be used to get discounts on the next purchases of digital games and Nintendo Switch Online memberships.

However, Switch users will no longer be able to earn Gold Points starting March 24, 1:30 p.m. Philippine time.

Nintendo did give scenarios wherein the reward points could still be collected:

  • When users pre-ordered digital content before 1:30 p.m. on March 24.
  • When gamers purchase a physical version of a game released on or before March 24. (Gold Points can only be earned for physical games within one year of its original release date)

Despite the program's discontinuation, Switch players may still use Gold Points 12 months after they're earned.

My Nintendo Platinum Points, another rewards program for players earned by using various services or as a prize for promotions and tournaments, will still be in place.

The discontinuation of Gold Points comes ahead of the launch of the new Switch 2. Nintendo gave a first look at the console earlier in January. Among the changes to expect include a size upgrade, a sleeker all-black look, a thinner kickstand, and magnet-connecting Joy-Cons.

More details about the console, which is set for a 2025 release, will be revealed at the upcoming Nintendo Direct on April 2.

Nintendo has also previously said that the upcoming Switch 2 will be backwards compatible.
