Doja Cat drops new song 'Balut'—here's what it means
American rapper Doja Cat dropped a new song Balut, just a few days before the release of her fourth studio album Scarlet.
The singer explained her chosen title in an Instagram story on Sunday, Sept. 17, saying that it "signifies a bird being eaten alive."
"It's a metaphor for Twitter stans and the death of Twitter toxicity. The beginning of 'X' and the end of tweets," she added.
While she only talked about its meaning briefly, it's interesting to note that in the Philippines, balut is a delicacy "consisting of duck eggs incubated almost to the point of hatching and then boiled," according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary.
Balut is the fourth track that has been shared from her latest project, following Attention, Paint the Town Red, and Demons, which she performed at the recently concluded MTV Video Music Awards. You may listen to it below.
Doja's upcoming album is set to be released on Sept. 22. According to Billboard, it will be accompanied by a headlining arena tour starting on Oct. 31 in San Francisco, with special performances by Ice Spice and Doechii.
The rapper is best known for hit songs like Say So, Like That, and Juicy.
