David Fincher to develop English adaptation of 'Squid Game': report

An English-language adaptation of the Netflix hit series Squid Game is in the works.

Deadline, citing anonymous sources, reported that American filmmaker David Fincher will develop it.

Details are vague at the moment, but there have been rumors about the matter for months.

Sources told Deadline that Fincher would likely commit to the Squid Game project in 2025, and may even squeeze in a movie before that.

The Fincher project would mark the first offshoot of the scripted series, and the first English-language one at that.

But it isn't the first time the series' universe has been extended.

In November 2023, the British reality television show Squid Game: The Challenge premiered on Netflix. Taking inspiration from the series, it features 456 players competing for $4.56 million (P265 million). It has been renewed for a second season.

Last August, the trailer for the mobile game called Squid Game: Unleashed has been released.

Squid Game follows the story of 456 individuals, who are buried in financial debt, playing a series of thrilling, deadly games. Only one winner would bring home the jackpot prize of 45.6 billion Korean won (P2 billion).

Its second season will premiere on Netflix on Dec. 26.

Fincher, who has worked with Netflix several times, is behind the platform's crime thriller series Mindhunter and is the executive producer of its adult animated series Love, Death, and Robots. He last directed the platform's 2023 action thriller The Killer.

Fincher's hit movies include Seven, Fight Club, The Game, Zodiac, The Social Network, and Gone Girl.
