First trailer for 'The Nun 2' teases terrifying backstory of demon nun Valak
The demon nun Valak is back to haunt your dreams.
The official trailer of the upcoming horror film The Nun 2 has been released, and it's plotting something more sinister for its victims.
Released by Warner Bros., the trailer opens with a chilling scene of a student at a French boarding school who narrates how she feels that feels that something is wrong with the place. She witnesses a man kneeling down, seemingly possessed by an evil entity.
The trailer then cuts to Sister Irene, the protagonist of the first film who had previously confronted Valak. She is summoned to the school to help and once again faces the horrific wrath of the "greatest evil in The Conjuring universe."
The trailer also teases that the film will give viewers more background about the demon nun, with a character narrating that the entity was "once an angel rejected by God."
Directed by Michael Chaves, The Nun 2 stars Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, Storm Reid, Anna Popplewell, and Bonnie Aarons.
It is the ninth installment in The Conjuring Universe franchise that was created by acclaimed horror director James Wan. Valak first appeared as the true antagonist in The Conjuring 2. Due to its appearance as a demonic nun, the character quickly became popular among fans of the franchise and received its own spinoff.
The synopsis of the upcoming film reads: "1956 – France. A priest is murdered. An evil is spreading. The sequel to the worldwide smash hit THE NUN follows SISTER IRENE as she once again comes face to face with the demonic force VALAK – THE DEMON NUN."
While the first film ended with Valak being defeated, it was revealed at the end that it had managed to possess a villager named Maurice.
Chaves previously told Entertainment Weekly, "Maurice made his way to France and he’s working at this boarding school as kind of a handyman. He has a friendship and a flirtation with one of the teachers there, and you can see him starting to mature, so that’s where our characters start out."
He continued, "But we know from the first film that there’s something terrible inside of him, that Valak escaped within him, and events pull Irene back on this collision course with her old friend."
The Nun 2 is set to premiere in international theaters on Sept. 6.
