'Carl's Date' trailer shows beloved 'Up' character getting ready for 2nd chance at love

Carl Fredricksen and Dug are all set to fly back into the big screen, as Pixar has released the official trailer for its upcoming short film Carl's Date.

14 years since the release of Pixar's hit film Up, the adorable duo of Carl and Dug are back to warm the hearts of all those who cried, laughed, and went through a rollercoaster of emotions while watching the 2009 flick.

This time, the old man reluctantly agrees to go on a date with a friend he calls "Miss Meyer" despite having no idea of how dating works these days. According to the film's official synopsis, Dug would step in "to calm Carl's pre-date jitters, and offer some tried-and-true tips for making friends—if you're a dog."

The lovable Golden Retriever is seen doing just that in the trailer where Carl asks him if the red heart-shaped chocolates he bought are "fun" and Dug responds, "Fun is digging in the dirt and destroying your flowers!"

Same as Up, Carl's Date sees Hollywood legend Ed Asner lending his voice to Carl almost two years since he passed away in August 2021 at the age of 91. The film's director, Bob Paterson, said in a presentation at Pixar that Asner and their team were able to complete the recording months before the actor passed away. Because of that, Paterson said that this would likely be the last chapter of the Up story.

Prior to the upcoming film, Pixar released the short film series Dug Days on Sept. 1, 2021. The series chronicles the humorous misadventures of the beloved dog that all occur in his backyard.

Carl's Date was originally set for a February release on Disney+ until the company retracted the announcement for undisclosed reasons. In March of this year, Pixar announced that the short film will now debut in theaters on June 16 alongside Elemental.
