Karen Davila explains comment about BINI, P-Pop: 'I should've been more specific'
Karen Davila has issued a statement after she stirred discussion among P-Pop fans when she commented on how BINI "is opening doors" for other groups to get more international recognition.
At the end of the July 23 TV Patrol broadcast, the veteran journalist talked about the impact of the girl group.
"Ang galing ng BINI. At saka ang maganda doon, ang K-Pop sikat sa buong mundo, maganda 'yung BINI na silang magbubukas ng pintuan para [sa] P-Pop. 'Pag sumikat sila, sisikat din 'yung iba pang Pilipino," Davila said.

This received mixed reactions online as fans of boy group SB19 talked about how they opened the doors for P-Pop in the Philippines.
"Excuse me po your honor, miss Karen[,] SB19 po ang kauna-unahang nagbukas ng P-Pop sa music industry po sa 'Pinas," one user on X said.
"SB19 had to crawl just so the other groups could run! Knowing that the boys are happy for the success of the other groups since their goal is for P-Pop to be global. Unfair naman [because] seems like you are discrediting their huge contribution to this movement," added another.
Others came to BINI's defense. One user wrote, "Totoo naman ah? Nauna ang SB19 but never really paved anyone's way. Hard pill to swallow but BINI is the one that's opening doors for P-Pop international recognition. Nauna sa pila [is not] nagbukas ng pinto."
"Totoo naman. SB19 showed that there was a door for P-Pop. BINI kicked the damn thing open. Before BINI, P-Pop never became mainstream. Now, P-Pop is in the widespread cultural consciousness," another user said.
Davila also cleared the air with a statement on July 26 afternoon.
"SB19 first opened the doors for P-POP internationally and made history! BINI is carving their own—being the first all girl group to hit it big," she said.
"I should've been more specific. SB19 and BINI, you make us all proud! And may you both open more doors for aspiring local artists. Both are Proudly Filipino."
