'Tailoring Black Style': Met Gala 2025 reveals theme, dress code, hosts

Published Feb 05, 2025 11:52 am

The theme for the 2025 Met Gala has been revealed.

This year, stars gracing the annual event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art will come in fashion following the theme "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." Meanwhile, the dress code is "Tailored for You," which makes a nod to the Costume Institute's 2025 exhibition.

In October 2024, the Met announced that his year's exhibition explores the "indelible style of Black men" and focuses on the emergence, significance, and proliferation of the Black dandy. It also takes inspiration from Monica L. Miller's 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.

As for the dress code, Vogue says that Tailored for You can be interpreted in different ways "but mostly it means embracing looks reflective of one's personal style."

The organizer of the Met Gala said to expect inspired takes on suiting—"from versions of the zoot silhouette popularized by jazz musicians in the 1940s to the bold, colorful styles worn by Congolese sapeurs."

In an Instagram post, the Met explained that the dress code "takes inspiration from the exhibition topic to encourage a creative interpretation and celebration of the themes explored in the show."

The event, which will take place on May 5, will be co-chaired by Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour. Lebron James will serve as an honorary chair.

Meanwhile, its hosting committee will include stars André 3000, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Jordan Casteel, Dapper Dan, Doechii, Ayo Edebiri, Edward Enninful, Jeremy O. Harris, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Rashid Johnson, Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee, Audra McDonald, Janelle Monáe, Jeremy Pope, Angel Reese, Sha'Carri Richardson, Tyla, Usher, and Kara Walker.

In past years, the Met Gala followed themes "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" in 2018, "Camp: Notes on Fashion" in 2019, "About Time: Fashion and Duration" in 2020, "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion" in 2021, "In America: An Anthology of Fashion" in 2022, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty" in 2023, and "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" in 2024.

The event is attended by celebrities, young creatives, and paragons from the world of fashion, arts, sports, and politics.
