'Courage the Cowardly Dog' head writer David Steven Cohen passes away
David Steven Cohen, head writer of beloved animated series Courage the Cowardly Dog has passed away after a battle with cancer.
On March 18 (PH Time), Cartoon Network paid tribute to the late writer on social media.
“The things we do for love. Thank you, David, for your work on the strangely beautiful world of Courage, lovingly adding to our childhood trauma while teaching poignant life lessons,” it wrote.
“How you've brought to life a scared but courageous little dog reminds us that we can do anything, even if we're afraid. Rest well,” it concluded.
Cohen passed away after a battle with cancer, according to animation historian and writer Jerry Beck.
“R.I.P. David Steven Cohen - I just heard that my friend has passed from cancer. He was an accomplished writer, composer, producer - animation lover and friend. Among his work, live action comedy series (Pee-Wee's Playhouse, Alf, Parker Lewis Can't Lose, etc) and hilarious work on FUNNY animated series like ALF TALES, COURAGE THE COWARDLY DOG, and many others)—and the feature film, BALTO—among much else,” he captioned his Facebook post.
“What a great guy. A true friend to all. You did good, David. You won't be forgotten,” he concluded.
Cohen is an Emmy-winning writer who debuted in the scene working with Steve Martin on a comedy-anthology series for CBS. He also worked for Nickelodeon’s The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss, Phil of the Future, and the animated film Balto, among others.
He also wrote lyrics and music including theme songs for Wubbulous World and Space Racers and the scoring for the Warner Bros./Scholastic animated feature Clifford’s Really Big Movie.
Courage the Cowardly Dog follows Courage, a kind but easily frightened dog, and his elderly owners Muriel and Eustace Baggage who live in the middle of nowhere. Paranormal stuff happens in Nowhere and it's up to Courage to save his family from monsters and other supernatural beings.
