A deeper look at skin, hair, and scalp science
Eight in 10 Pinoys believe the beauty industry is rife with misinformation.
Much of this can be attributed to social media, where trends can quickly shape what people trust and advice often comes from those without professional expertise.
Unilever sees education as an important step towards closing that gap.
On Oct. 1, the leading consumer goods company hosted Unilever Beauty & Wellbeing’s first-ever Beauty Science Summit at The Fifth at Rockwell.
The half-day event marked the official launch of B&W’s Medical Marketing Capability Building initiative.
It brought together medical societies, scientific experts, and industry partners to explore Filipinos’ skin and hair concerns today while presenting science-backed solutions for their changing needs.
“Our main goal is to make sure that we advance education, research, and shared learning,” says Unilever Beauty & Wellbeing Research and Development Lead Daniella De Leon.
“Ultimately, we want to help consumers make better everyday beauty choices.”
Science for better skin, hair, and scalp care
More than 100 participants heard from members of the Philippine Dermatological Society, as well as Unilever’s R&D leaders from across Southeast Asia.
The summit covered topics ranging from skin barrier vulnerability to the most common causes of hair and scalp damage.
Aesthetic Dermatologist and Anti-aging Medicine Specialist Dr. Lala Sanchez explains the importance of having these kinds of events:
“We have our own specializations, and sometimes, if we don’t go outside our field, it’s harder to identify the concerns of our patients and give them the right solution.”
She adds, “With the Beauty Science Summit, we are able to hear about new and changing cases and say, ‘I recognize this,’ and therefore provide the appropriate care.”
Unilever continues to be a reliable and credible partner in the beauty journey of Filipinos and consumers around the world.
This is reflected in its growing portfolio of clinically studied and scientifically backed products, designed to support healthy skin, hair, scalp, and overall well-being.
For Vaseline Global and Southeast Asia Research and Development Lead Dr. Anuchai Sinsawat, the company’s 150 years of service is what sets it apart.
“We have a long history with skincare. We started with petroleum jelly, and now we have body serums and lotions,” Sinsawat says.
“We study how to moisturize, protect, and strengthen the skin because it’s the largest organ in our body. Rest assured that everything we put out there is made to not only soothe, but also help heal.”
From facts to fun
The summit was made even more interactive with games that challenged attendees to sort common skin, hair, and scalp care claims as right, wrong, or questionable, turning learning into a fun way to debunk misconceptions.
Booths from Clear, Dove, Simple, and Vaseline also offered activities, from free skin, hair, and scalp analyses to tote bags and other freebies.
When asked what the public can bank on from Unilever’s brands, Sanchez shares a fun fact: “Did you know that they started with Vaseline? Over time, they expanded their offerings to cover a wider range of areas, from food products that support gut health to hair care products for different concerns and preferences.”
“That’s what I like about Unilever,” she continues thoughtfully.
“They’re really committed to helping patients understand their needs, and tailoring solutions that deliver long-term results.”
